Short Description:
Resources associated with the specific culture and language such as books and magazines in the diasporic communities is a rarity. Imagine if you wish to read a recently published book in a Nepali language. While you might be able to procure it from Nepal and have it shipped, that is costly in terms of both time and money or burden someone travelling back, it might just be readily available at your next-door neighbours’ personal shelf and you are completely unaware about it. The Community Book Exchange Program aims to alleviate this problem by bringing in the community together to share their own personal knowledge base for the well-being of others. An online application developed to support this program will allow users in the community to be able to browse the available books, send requests for borrowing and provide the possibility for lending them to the requestor. The platform should allow features such as to keep track of who owns, have reserved, loaned and how long a particular user has held it. Developing such programs requires participation of the community for it to be affordable and sustainable. The community Book Exchange Program was developed and led by the community volunteers supported by Nepalese Canadian Society of Edmonton (NECASE).
