Presentation Title: Intercommunity Interaction #1 – Introduction to the Nepalese Community in British Columbia
Speaker:
Dr. Prabeen Joshi
Nepal Cultural Society of BC (NCSBC)
Date/Time: May 20 , 2022 (8:30 PM MST)
Short Description:
Nepalese first started migrating to the Province of British Columbia in the mid-1980s and there has been a significant influx in the past couple of decades. Most individuals spend time outside the community for work however when it comes to the overall community, the presenter is of the opinion that the community, with some exceptions, has remained largely closed and to date as an invisible minority. The community organizations have been strategically established to serve niche areas of practice with overarching goals to serve the Nepalese in BC and back home. History shows that with proper coordination with their counterparts, the organizations have been very successful in complementing each other’s work.
This presentation will provide a brief history of Nepalis in BC (with stats), their challenges, achievements, activities, some example projects, and where the presenter thinks the overall community is heading.
