Nepalese Canadian Cultural Heritage Centre (NCCHC), initiated by Nepalese Canadian Society of Edmonton (NECASE), is a dream project of people of Nepalese ethnicity living not only in Edmonton, but also in Alberta and Canada as a whole. Main aim of NCCHC is to inspire both current and future generation to preserve and promote the Nepalese art, language, culture and heritage.

The NCCHC project is deep rooted to community needs, community commitment, and community spirit, and yet a collaborative project. NCCHC integrates the following three aspects for community development:

1. a facility that meets current and future needs for spaces by the community,
2. community initiated programs that fulfill community needs, including programs aimed at physical and mental wellbeing of vulnerable age group,
3. volunteer contribution by community members to run programs and operate NCCHC.

The objectives of the NCCHC Project are:

to develop a unique infrastructure to showcase Nepalese cultural heritage that helps in preserving cultural identity of Nepalese Canadians,

to provide quality space for social and recreational interaction opportunities to enhance physical and mental wellbeing for seniors, children, youth and women as well as community members at large,

to provide the growing Nepalese community a suitable and adequate facility to deliver Society programs for the preservation of Nepalese cultural heritage including language, arts and traditional music,

to provide organizations of Nepalese origin and other community groups in Edmonton suitable space to engage in their community development initiatives, and

to provide a venue with unique facilities/resources to practice Nepalese and other community cultural activities.

NCCHC project status

1. NCCHC Committee has developed an infrastructure plan, based on pre-feasibility study report, which includes an exhibition area, multipurpose facility, and a spiritual centre.
2. Preliminary cost of the Centre is $ 8.6 million.
3. Community contribution is $ 1.1 million, and NECASE’s existing building is included in community contribution.
4. NECASE under the leadership of NCCHC Committee has started looking for funding for the construction of the Centre:
   1. NECASE has received planning grant from the City of Edmonton.
   2. NECASE has applied for infrastructure grant to the Government of Alberta and waiting for the result.
   3. NECASE has held meetings with the City of Edmonton for seeking grant to the NCCHC.
5. NECASE has applied for a grant to Government of Canada to conduct a project related to last rites (अन्तिम सम्स्कार वा सी–गुथी/ सना–गुथी) under NCCHC.
6. NCCHC has established a Championing Committee, which is running a community funding campaign.

Who is involved in the NCCHC project?

NECASE Board in 2018 formed NCCHC Committee to further the project.
